Alien Terrariums
Part of series exploring plants that are ‘stranger than fiction’ and have alien-like qualities or characteristics. The first terrarium contains the bonkers Bat Flower which predatory look has inspired the designs of aliens in films, and the Voodoo Lily which blooms once a year with the biggest flower in the world and excretes a sinister putrid stench to attract insects that usually feast upon dead animals. The second terrarium contains the Devil’s Hand plant from Mexico and the sneaky, carnivorous Pitcher Plant which uses it’s shaped vessels to produce a sweet syrupy secretion that attracts insects and dissolves them into nutritious goo that is then absorbed back into the plant. The third round terrarium contains the Passion Flower, the Venus Fly Trap, the Resurrection Plant (that comes back to life) and, my favourite, the sensitive plant – which folds up when it’s touched.
